Abstract

The story of Adam and Eve and their sin of eating from the Forbidden Fruit are mentioned in Bible and Qur'an. Despite some similarities in narration of this event, there are nuances in some important points. One of the significant differences is the consequences of Adam's sin in eating the Forbidden Fruit. Traditional narratives of the Bible emphasize on human death as one of these consequences. This belief has been considered as one of the fundamental assumptions in Christian theology. This paper discusses that human's physical death is not necessarily the result of Adam's Sin, as narrated in Torah. Rather, the spiritual death that is considered as a result of human sin is the consequence of Adam's sin like other human's sins. This research maintains that the statement of Torah is completely interpretable and reasonable by this explanation despite some Christian interpretations that changed the whole story. In this respect, Quran has never mentioned anything about the physical and spiritual death of Adam and his progeny. Rather, Quran states that his fault in eating the Forbidden Fruit was forgiven by merciful God and God will never punish people for the sins of others and thus, sin is not hereditary.
